The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is introducing Time-of-the-day (ToD) Metering and billing system following a direction given by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC)  The idea is to incentivise the consumer sector to help solve the systemic problem of the high peak demand in the State.

Time-of-the-day (ToD) metering of power consumption is being introduced for nearly 11,000 high-end domestic connections in the State from the Jan 2013 to give them a financial incentive in consciously shifting a part of their overall electricity use from the hours of peak demand to those of lean demand daily.

The problem in Kerala is that from around 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., power consumption is too high compared to the daytime consumption. Evening power consumption is naturally high everywhere when all lights are switched on, but in Kerala the variation is too wide because the industries sector that draws large quantities of power throughout the day is not as developed as in States such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The KSEB was introducing the system in the hope that the high-end domestic consumers would go soft on their use of electricity during the peak hours by not using their power-guzzling home appliances when lights were on everywhere.

ToD metering would be applicable for all domestic consumers drawing more than 500 units of power a month. The meters had been installed in all such houses.

The normal tariff for consumers in this category was Rs. 6.50 a unit. This rate would be henceforth applicable to them only from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., these consumers will have to pay 20 per cent more than the normal rate, which will come to Rs. 7.80 a unit.

During the lean consumption period from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., they need pay only 90 per cent of the normal rate, which will come to Rs. 5.85 a unit.

Because of recent environmental and economic crisis, a sudden interest has developed among people who want to know how to cut cost with use of solar power. This kind of energy is derived from the sun and can be used for several different household as well as industrial purposes such as cooking food, heating water, air conditioning, generating electricity and running cars. Since solar power is a renewable source of energy, it is friendly for the environment too. The best thing about solar power is that it is available for absolutely free and the only investment you will need to make will be on installing the solar panels.

While using these solar appliances for different household or industrial purposes, you not only save your energy and fuel costs significantly, but you also contribute to a greener environment by cutting on harmful emissions and residues.

Solar Cooker
You can use a solar cooker to bake, roast or boil foods without the usage of any fuel, charcoal or electricity. This appliance does not emit any gases, which is why, it does not leave any residue on your food items and is considered to be environment friendly too. Cooking food in a solar cooker is economical and affordable and requires less effort too. You just need to place the food in the cooker leave it out under the sun. Your delicious meal will be ready to devour in just a couple of hours.

Solar Generator
Solar generator is a device which converts solar energy into electrical energy with use of photo-voltaic cells. It is a unit which allows all the electrical appliances in your home to run on solar power. One advantage is that it can even store solar energy so that it can be applied for later use.

Solar Thermal System
These are heating units used for keeping your home warm with the use of solar energy. A major percentage of your electrical bills consist of air conditioning costs, but with solar thermal systems, you can control temperature inside your home without worrying about your heating bills. There are basically two kinds of solar thermal systems, STE and Photovoltaic. STE uses solar power to produce heat inside your house, while photovoltaic units convert solar energy into electricity which you can use to heat your home.
Solar Geyser
Solar geysers are used for heating water not just in homes, but also in offices, hotels, restaurants, hospitals and other establishments. Whether it is rain or shine, a solar geyser will be able to provide you warm water at all times. By installing a solar geyser, you not only cut your energy costs, but also reduce carbon footprint on the environment.
Solar Car
Solar cars are electric vehicles which have solar panels installed on their body. The photovoltaic cells convert solar energy into electric energy and propel the vehicle without the use of any fuel. At present, solar cars are not available for day-to-day transportation purposes, but are under demonstration of companies sponsored by government agencies.

Why We Want to Use CFL lambs

A CFL bulb works up to 10000 hours. About 490units of electricity can be saved by this time. If Rs.3 is estimated for one unit, the amount of electricity saved is Rs.1470. It is the case of a single CFL bulb. Just think that there are 10 CFL bulbs in your house. Then the amount saved is more than Rs.14000.

An 11watt CFL bulb will cost Rs.200. Just imagine that you use this CFL bulb instead of 60watt ordinary bulb. 72 units of electricity is saved in one year if used for four hours per day. Save Rs.216 a year for Rs.3 per unit. If there are 10such CFL bulbs the amount saved just for lights are Rs.2160.

  • Find the unnecessary lights in the house. E.g.: fancy lights, illumination lights etc. Decide that you will keep them switched off.
  • Take an oath that you won’t keep a single light switched on when not needed. Teach your children also to do so.
  • Practice not to use lights during day time. Allow natural light to get inside by keeping open the windows. Design your house in such a way that you don’t have to use lights inside the house during day time.
  • Keep the light fittings clean so that the brightness of light doesnt diminish.
  • Arrange the lights in such a way that it is available only in the places required rather than lighting the whole room.
  • Use only CFL bulbs instead of ordinary bulbs. Use 11watts CFL bulbs instead of 60watt bulbs.

  • Use electronic chalks by removing the old copper chalks. Along with this, if you start using 36watt slim tubes, you can save about 30% of electricity.
  • Dont misunderstand that a zero watt bulb doesnt use even a single watt of electricity. Its original wattage is 15 to 28. If a 15watt bulb is kept switched on for a whole day, the amount of electricity used in two months is 21.6 units. i.e. Rs.64.80. Use an LED lamp instead of it. The electricity used is 1.44 units. The expense is just Rs.4.32.

Renewable Energy Made Easy: Energy from Alternative Energy Sources

Be The First To Comment
Currently, the apprehension of energy crisis is looming large all over the world. Owing to the indiscriminate use of the non-renewable energy resources they are on the verge of extinction. In such a circumstance it has become pivotal to look for energy sources to meet the ever increasing needs. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory states that many renewable energy technologies are available for use

Some of the best alternative energy sources are

  1. Solar Energy
  2. Hydro power
  3. Geothermal Energy
  4. Wind Energy
  5. Biomass Energy
But these options are limited .We should understand these in detail.

Biomass Energy

Biomass energy has been used since long. People first used it by burning wood to cook food and keep themselves warm in cold weather. Wood is the most common source of biomass energy, but there are many other sources of biomass energy sources including grass, food crops, waste and residue from forestry and agricultural land.
Even the organic waste components emitted by the industries can be used to produce biomass energy. Recently, harvesting methane gas from landfills has become a popular way to produce biomass energy. This energy can be used for generating electricity, for transportation purpose and to produce certain material that would otherwise use the precious, non renewable energy sources
It is no doubt that is sun is the most power natural source of energy. The solar energy (heat and light) which is available in abundance for free can be used for cooling, lighting, water heating, generating electricity and a variety of other purpose both at residential and industrial level. Most of the renewable energy sources are directly or indirectly obtained from the sun. For example, sun’s heat is a major factor responsible for blowing of wind.
The light from the sun is a crucial factor for the growth of plants and trees that are used for producing biomass energy. Additionally, the heat from plays a vital role in the evaporation cycle and the rain, which in turn makes production of hydropower possible

Wind Energy

The natural movement of air occurs when the warm air rises up and it is replaced by the cooler air. The movement of air causes the wind to blow and when the wind blows with great intensity it has tremendous energy.
This energy from the wind has been used to sail ships in the oceans since a long time. Today, with the advancement of technology, the wind energy is used to drive the windmills that are connected to turbines for producing electricity

Geothermal Energy

The natural heat inside the earth’s crust produces hot water and steam. This can be used trapped to drive power generators and produce electricity. This free energy can be used for applications such as heaters or coolers for residential and industrial purposes.
The Geothermal energy can be derived from underground reservoirs through drilling or other geothermal sources that are close to the earth’s surface.

Hydro Power

It is no doubt that is sun is the most power natural source of energy. The solar energy (heat and light) which is available in abundance for free can be used for cooling, lighting, water heating, generating electricity and a variety of other purpose both at residential and industrial level.
