  • Both these appliances are not used in the proper manner in most of the houses. Use its full capacity. But don’t fill it with things that don’t fit in it. It will increase the work load and the heat of the machine. It will decrease the lifespan of the machine.
  • Use mixers that are capable of showing overloads.
  • The blades and jars within the mixer for each purpose must be used properly. If not used the correct jar for each purpose, there will be electricity loss.
  • The blades of the mixer can get eroded with time. Change it if needed.
  • While grinding things, take only the necessary amount of water in the jar.

  • In most houses both water and electricity is wasted while pumping water into the tank. The motor is usually switched off when water overflows from the tank. That much water and electricity is lost.
There is a solution to overcome this problem. Find the time required for the tank to be completely filled. Set the alarm ½ minute before the tank is completely filled. As soon as the alarm rings, switch off the tank.
  • Many things are to be noted while fixing the motor. The twists on the pipe should be reduced maximum. The foot valve should have large diameter and contain lots of pores in it.
  • Rewind motors use more electricity. They use 30% more electricity.
  • The capacity of the motor must be as much required. The motors having more capacity will use more electricity.
  • The position of the pump within the well must not exceed more than 3 meters from the water level. If the motor is placed at great heights it will use more electricity and the amount of water pumped will also be less.

  • More electricity is consumed if ice gets accumulated. So defrost the freezer occasionally.
  • Electricity is used most from six to ten during night. If the fridge is switched off during this peek time at least for an hour you can save electricity. The things inside the fridge won’t get damaged by switching it off for an hour.
  • The condenser coil in the backside is used to carry the heat within the refrigerator while cooling the inside. So in order to get air circulation the fridge must be kept at a distance of about 15cm from the walls on the back and sides. The condenser coil should also be kept dust free.

Make sure that the leaves of the fan are at a distance of at least 1 meter from the ceiling while fixing it. Examine weather the leaves are attached at the correct slanting.
  • Use high quality electronic regulators instead of the ordinary ones.
  • Changing the fan speed occasionally will cause more consumption of electricity.
  • It’s better to use exhaust fans in rooms having greater heights.
  • The motor will have more load if the weight of the fan is great thereby causing a damage.
  • Buying low cost fans for less profit can cause a lot of loss. Consider the cost of a 60 watt fan to be Rs.1050. If used it for 365 days daily for 10 hours, it uses 219 units of electricity.

The current charge for one year if estimated Rs.3 for 1 unit is Rs.657. Consider that you had bought a fan with 110 watt. Then it will cost only half of it.ie.Rs.500. Can you estimate the loss caused by this fan.

This fan will use about 401 units for 365 days. The amount you have to pay for one year is Rs.1203. Then the difference is Rs.366.

A profit of Rs.1830 can be made in a house having five such fans within one year.

The computer has also got a great role in increasing the current electricity consumption. The computers that are in speed mode through power management systems are not switched off. They will use about 8 to 15 watts of electricity. So switch off the computer completely.
  • LCD monitors will save electricity. So try to use them. When a 17 inch LCD monitor uses 35 watts of electricity, the old CRT monitors having the same size will use more than 90 watts of electricity.
  • Usually while listening music on computer, the monitor will be switched on. It will cause loss of electricity. Consider the monitor to be switched on for about three hours daily. If it is a CRT monitor it will need more than 90 watts of electricity. The amount of electricity  required for 30 days is 8 units. You can save Rs.24 if Rs.3 is estimated for one unit, by practicing this simple switch off.
  • If not used the computer for more than 10 minutes set earlier into power saving mode.
  • Dim the brightness of the computer monitor.

Electricity bills have literally left you shocked? 2013 on wards ,if you consume 300 units then price/unit will the exact market price.  Want to reduce your high flying electricity bill? Here we go with some tips to strive towards a shock-free electricity bill:

Find the Consumption of Each Equipment

We can calculate the amount of electricity consumed in home. Find the wattage and the number of hours we use a particular electrical appliance. Find the product of these and then divide it by 1000 to get the units of electricity used by an appliance.

For e.g.: The amount of electricity used by a 90watt fan that works for five hours is 60 ×  5 /1000=03 units.

Time Taken by Different Equipment to Consume 1 unit Electricity

1 Unit = 1000 watts hour =1 KWH

Equipment           - Time Taken
FAN                    - 16 HRS + 40 MIN
MIXER /MIXCY - 2 HRS +13 MIN
IRON BOX         - 1 HOUR
TV                       - 10 HRS
FRIDGE              - 10 HRS
BULB 100 W      - 10 HRS
CFL BULB          - 90 HRS +55 MIN
TUBE LIGHT      - 23 HRS +15 MIN
WATER PUMB   - 1 HRS+20 MIN
AC                      - 40 MIN

When the Voltage Varies..

Electric mishaps are on a ride during rainy season. A light protector caution can prevent both the disaster and the electricity consumption. At times, we can see lights glowing with unprecedented radiance. Excess voltage accounts for this. This may cause electronic devices to burst and may even cause an outbreak of fire.

Excess voltage occurs due to umpteen reasons. If the link in the three face meter breaks…or if a supply is being taken to the vicinity…or if the cable lines oscillate…or if the fuse connection in transformer neutral accumulates verdigris… all these results in a rise in voltage. If you feel like something is wrong, switch off the main switch. Inform the same at the electricity office.
  1. Don’t insert or pull out a plug if your hands are damp. Make sure that the switch is in off mode; wear rubber slippers before inserting or pulling out a plug.
  2. Switch off the fridge first and then only clean up. Don’t use metal apparatus to remove ice during defreezing.
  3. Before changing a bulb, switch off the connection. Avoid being near the bulb while switching it on because bulb is prone to explode in humid atmosphere.
